Laura
Educational Volunteer
Laura is a civil servant and has an MA in Security, Intelligence, and Diplomacy. She has had many roles throughout her career so far, but they all share a common focus: protection and keeping people safe. She became an FGM casework specialist whilst working with asylum seekers and refugees, and the subject has remained very close to her heart ever since.
Within the FGM Education Project, Laura contributes to learning materials and content, developing and reviewing guides, and evaluating their impact.
Why this work matters
Education is vital in stopping the abhorrent practice of FGM. The safeguarding of women and girls can only truly be effective with informed, sensitive, and accessible support. Lack of education and communication with regards to FGM allows the practice to persist – so many survivors are not fully aware of what happened to their bodies, why, or that FGM is the cause of the often serious health issues they experience throughout their lives. Education acts as a powerful tool to prevent the practice, protect the vulnerable, provide compassionate and effective care, and empower communities to abandon these deeply rooted harmful traditions.
