Signs of FGM

Signs that FGM might happen soon can include:

  • the arrival of a relative or a person known as a 'cutter' from another country,

  • a special ceremony marking a girl's transition to womanhood or preparation for marriage,

  • a female family member such as a mother, sister, or aunt having undergone FGM,

  • a family planning a long trip abroad or visiting relatives during summer vacation,

  • a girl's unexplained or extended absence from school,

  • academic difficulties, or

  • a girl displaying signs of wanting to run away from home.


Indicators of potential FGM having taken place may manifest as:

  • Challenges in mobility

  • Prolonged periods in the bathroom

  • A withdrawn or anxious demeanor

  • Changes in behavior upon returning from school

  • Hesitance in seeking medical attention or regular check-ups

  • Seeking help without openly disclosing the problem due to fear or shame
