The available treatment options are:

  • Deinfibulation

  • Psychological support

  • Sexual counselling

  • Health information

Deinfibulation

Deinfibulation is highly recommended for the prevention and treatment of obstetric complications in women with type III FGM (strong recommendation; very low-quality evidence). It is advised to perform antepartum or intrapartum deinfibulation to aid in childbirth for women with type III FGM (conditional recommendation; very low-quality evidence). Deinfibulation is also suggested for the prevention and treatment of urologic complications, particularly recurrent UTIs and urinary retention, in girls and women with type III FGM (strong recommendation; no direct evidence).

Best Practices for Deinfibulation:

  • Girls and women eligible for deinfibulation should receive thorough preoperative information.

  • Girls and women undergoing deinfibulation should be offered local anesthesia.

Psychological Support

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) should be considered for girls and women with FGM experiencing symptoms consistent with anxiety disorders, depression, or PTSD (conditional recommendation; no direct evidence).

Psychological support should be accessible to girls and women who are anticipating or have undergone any surgical procedure to address health complications from FGM.

Sexual Health

Sexual counselling is recommended for the prevention or treatment of female sexual dysfunction in women with FGM (conditional recommendation; no direct evidence).

Information & Education

Information, education, and communication (IEC) interventions regarding FGM and women's health should be provided to girls and women with any form of FGM. Health education information on deinfibulation should be given to girls and women with type III FGM. Healthcare providers must deliver accurate and understandable information using appropriate language and methods. Health workers caring for girls and women with FGM should receive information about the different types of FGM and their associated immediate and long-term health risks. It should be made clear to healthcare providers that medicalisation of FGM is unacceptable.
